It has been confirmed that there have been sixteen fatalities in the Florida high school shooting.

Florida Senator Bill Nelson had previously confirmed that there have been ‘many fatalities’ at Stoneman Douglas High School, following the mass shooting.

Reports have also confirmed in that the gunman involved in the Florida High School Shooting is now in police custody.

A helicopter footage, which has been circulated around American news media, shows a man in a red shirt surrounded by police officers whilst in handcuffs, it’s assumed that the person in question is the gunman.

According to various media reports, at least 20 people were injured in the mass shooting.

Broward Sheriff’s Twitter account confirmed that the shooter has been placed in police custody.

While the identity of the shooter hasn’t been confirmed, Broward Schools Superintendent, Robert Runcie, has confirmed that there have been ‘numerous fatalities’. He also added the alleged gunman in custody is possibly a former student at the school.

In a brief press statement Runcie said:

There are numerous fatalities. It’s a horrific situation.

It’s just a horrible day for us. We have no evidence at this point there was more than one shooter.

It is a day that you pray every day that you never have to see. We didn’t have any phone calls or threats that we know of that were made.

We cannot live in a world built on fear, we have do what we can to provide the greatest safety measures for our kids.

Mental health issues in this country are growing and it’s certainly something that needs to be addressed in our school system.

At least 20 people have been injured in shooting and authorities cannot confirm how many fatalities there are yet.

According to the NBC News and the Broward Sheriff’s department, there have been at least 14 victims in the shooting.

According to research by Everytown for Gun Safety, this is now the 18th shooting this year in the US which has occurred on or around school premises.

In January 2017, two people were killed and 17 injured at a high school in Kentucky.
