It’s looking like Alexis is making another huge U-turn in what’s turning into the biggest transfer saga of recent history. With Arsenal keen to cash in on the want-away forward, both Manchester clubs have been in the running to sign one of the best players in the Premier League and he now looks to be heading in a different direction yet again.
The former Barcelona man arrived at Arsenal after being on the fringes of one of the best Barcelona squads the world has ever seen and looking to make a step forward in his career. Arriving for just shy of £32 million in the summer of 2014 he has gone on to become arguably Arsenal’s best player.
In his three full seasons at the club he has won Arsenal’s best player on two occasions and in his first season, he was voted as the 015 Fans’ Player of the Year. He was even described by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry as “Arsenal’s best signing of the last six years” when he first arrived and has certainly lived up to the title.
His time at Arsenal hasn’t quite gone the way he will have hoped. They have been unsuccessful in bridging the gap between themselves and the top three teams in the league and have failed in mounting a genuine title challenge. Despite some major investment in the team they haven’t managed to gain success in the league, though they have found domestic success in the form of the FA Cup.
Arsenal have won 2 of the last 3 FA Cups and it is the only saving grace of Sanchez’s time at Arsenal. Despite showing himself as the best player in the team, he hasn’t been able to carry them to a premier league title and after a drawn-out transfer saga in the summer transfer window, he looked set to leave the club in this January window.
Manchester City and Pep Guardiola looked set on signing Chile’s record scorer in the Summer with the forward very keen on working with his former manager. The move eventually fell through and Sanchez stayed at the Gunners with one year left on his contract with the club.
A lot of talk was made at the time that Arsenal should sell Sanchez instead of forcing him to play at a club he has no drive to succeed at. They would have received a fee above the £50 million mark and would have been able to reinvest the funds.
The decision to keep him was met with mixed reviews and now the player has been linked with another big-money move away from the club in this January window. Manchester City again came in for him but with an offer around the £20 million mark which was rebuffed by Arsenal and recent reports suggest that now City have given up on signing him.
The cost of the deal was the major factor in the deal not going ahead as it was understood the wage demands of the player would have placed him way ahead of his would-be teammates. This would have caused upset in amongst the group and could’ve affected their title challenge.
Pep Guardiola said: “I am not the guy with the mathematics, I think he’s going to United. Congratulations to both of them. The players and the managers decide what’s best. There’s nothing to add. My opinion on Alexis remains the same. It was a pleasure to be with him in Barcelona – I wish him all the best.”
With Guardiola looking like he may have given up on signing the player he may be ecstatic with the most recent update on the saga.
Since City pulled out, their city rivals Manchester United looked like they were extremely close to a deal with Arsenal. Initially rivalling City’s offer of a hefty transfer fee, they have since turned to a player exchange offer with their relatively recent signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan set to be heading in the opposite direction.
The former Dortmund playmaker arrived at Manchester United in the summer of 2016 after an incredible season in the Bundesliga. He finished top of the assists list with 15 and was voted Bundesliga Players’ Player of the Season.
Costing roughly £30 million he is apparently reluctant in making the move to London. He is on a lot of money on Manchester United and it is reported that Arsenal are reluctant to meet his demands despite being extremely interested in the player.
Jose Mourinho has recently come out and said that he is ‘calmly waiting for news’ on the situation. He went on to say:
“There is no point in trying to hide or deny, but it is not done at all, I think clearly everybody knows that we are there and especially when Arsenal manager speaks so clearly like he did.”
New reports are suggesting that the deal is stalling and looking at how long it has taken for the two party’s to agree on terms, it’s potentially going to fall through. Reports earlier in the season suggested that Alexis may bide his time and take a huge £15 million joining bonus in the summer from Manchester City. He now looks set to have turned his attention to that lucrative bonus.
He is now looking to finish the season at Arsenal and play out the remainder of his contract at the club. He returned to full Arsenal training this morning and is now apparently content to wait out for his chance in the summer to rejoin with manager Pep Guardiola.
With Gabriel Jesus returning from injury much faster than expected, Pep is more than happy to wait until the summer to bolster his squad further. Let’s face it, with City running away with the league this year, the addition of Sanchez would make for one of the greatest squads on the planet.
