Actress Olivia Newton-John and actor John Travolta rose to fame after starring as the film’s main characters, Sandy and Danny. Even though the film was released back in 1978 and was set in the 1950’s, to this day it remains as popular as ever.

After Sandy and Danny part ways after falling in love over summer, they realise that they are attending the same high school. The film follows their romance, as the couple face all sorts of difficulties.

2. Stockard Channing wasn’t always going to be Rizzo

American actress Lucie Arnaz was originally cast as the role of Rizzo. Her mother, Lucille Ball, was infamous for outspokenness and got in touch with the producers of Grease to object to her daughter taking part in a screen test. Ball argued that she used to own Paramount Studios, where the screen tests were taking play. The director spotted Stockard Channing in a theatre production, before contacting her and casting her as Rizzo.

 

 

3. Carrie Fisher was also in the running to be Rizzo

The actress, known for playing Princess Leia in Star Wars was also considered to play the role of Rizzo.

4. Actor Henry Winkler was offered to play of Danny Zuko

Believe it or not, the actor turned down the role of Danny. Because he had played The Fonz in Happy Days where he played a high school student similar to Danny Zuko, Winkler decline the role in fear of being a typecast!

5. Jeff Conaway, who played Kenickie played Danny Zuko on Broadway

Grease was originally intended for the stage, but when it was proposed as a film, Conaway was re-cast as Kenickie, one of the greaser boys.

 

6. Guess who the film’s star John Travolta played on stage?

Three words ‘beautiful blonde pineapple’. Yes, the film’s leading actor played the smaller role of Doody in the stage production.

7. Coach Calhoun was offered actor Harry Reems

The film’s casting hit controversy when the star of porno ‘Deep Throat’, Harry Reems, was cast to play Coach Calhoun. Infact, there was so much uproar that the role had to be re-cast. It was eventually offered to Sid Caesar. We think this probably would have added a whole new meaning to the coach’s role!

The actress could not get the hang of the American accent so the story had to be changed that Sandy was actually from Australia.

9. Bobby Rydell was the inspiration for naming the school

Rydell high was named after Bobby Rydell, a pop star and teen icon in the 50s and 60s.

Stockard Channing received real Hickeys from Jeff Conaway himself. The actor insisted that the love bites must be the ‘real thing’. Dedication to the role or a little bit weird?
